Chair of Wesley Studies

The Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian Chair of Wesley Studies is an endowed professorial chair at Tyndale Seminary, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The occupant is responsible for teaching and research in the broad field of Wesley Studies, for mentoring students of Wesleyan persuasion, and for linking with constituents from Wesleyan denominations.

Responsibilities:
Teaching
  • Develop and teach courses in Wesley Studies
  • Supervise theses and research projects in Wesleyan-related fields
  • Teach courses as needed in related disciplines from a Wesleyan theological perspective
Research and Scholarship
  • Engage in research, writing and publishing with the broad field of Wesleyan theology and practice.
  • Oversee the monograph series Tyndale Studies on Wesleyan History and Theology
Curriculum Development
  • Develop a comprehensive, relevant, and engaging curriculum in Wesley Studies
  • Assist in recruiting, developing and overseeing qualified part-time instructors to teach as needed
Mentoring
  •  Provide mentoring and academic advisement to students, particularly to those preparing for ministry in Wesleyan-related denominations
  • Invest in mentoring emerging Wesleyan scholars and doctoral students with a view to raising up a strong network of Canadian Wesley scholars
Service
  • Participate fully in the academic and community life of the school
  • Build strong connections between Tyndale and its external constituency, particularly with Wesleyan-related churches, pastors and denominational personnel
 
Desired Qualifications
  • Wesleyan by theological conviction and participation in its church and scholarly communities
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • Proven experience in teaching and mentoring graduate theological students
  • Publication history and research interests in the field of Wesley Studies
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate scholarship, faith, and practical ministry
  • Familiarity with the Canadian context is an asset
  • Excellent communicator with well-developed teaching and preaching abilities
  • Visionary, creative, and committed to the ongoing development of a vibrant Wesley Studies program at Tyndale
  • Supportive of Tyndale’s evangelical, transdenominational identity
