Bachelor of Education

Bachelor of Education FAQs

Q. What are the admission requirements?

  • An officially recognized 3-year (90 credit hours, 15 full credit) baccalaureate degree from an officially recognized degree-granting institution with university status. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed, or who are completing, a 4-year baccalaureate degree (120 credit hours, 20 full credits), or who have completed both a 3-year baccalaureate degree plus the equivalent of 30 credit hours at another officially recognized post-secondary institution (i.e. an Ontario College of Applied Arts and Technology).
  • A GPA in the “B” range (minimum 70% or 2.7 on a 4.0 scale) calculated on the applicant’s best 60 credit hours of undergraduate university courses. College diploma and /or certificate courses, whether transferred into the university degree program or not, will not be included in the GPA calculation.
  • For those completing an undergraduate degree during the application process, only courses completed by the application deadline will be assessed. A conditional acceptance, pending receipt of your final, official transcript, may be offered.
  • Applicants to the Junior/Intermediate program must be completing or have completed 12-18 university credit hours in a teachable area. At Tyndale, the teachable areas are: English, French as a Second Language, Geography, History, Mathematics, and Science-General.
  • Applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not studied for three years in an English speaking secondary or post-secondary institution (where English is the language of instruction and examinations are in English) must submit proof of English language proficiency by supplying their scores/results of either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Go to www.toefl.org or www.ielts.org for further information about these tests. Applicants who are not residents of Canada at the time of application must arrange to take the TOEFL/TWE or IELTS in the country from which they are applying. Tyndale’s TOEFL institution code is 0532.

Minimum scores: IELTS: 6, TOEFL (iBT): 88, TOEFL (PBT): 570, TOEFL Computer-based Test: 230, TOEFL (TWE)*: 5

*The TWE is typically taken with the paper-based and computer-based TOEFL exam.

Note: Meeting these test scores does not guarantee admission to Tyndale University College & Seminary, and additional testing may be required before admittance is granted.

  • Application Fee of $50 ($150 for non-North American applicants).
  • An interview may be required.
  • Supplementary documents are required. Please see the Application Form for full details.

Q. What will a typical week in the program look like?

It depends on the time of year. Tyndale's program has many diverse learning opportunities for the Teacher Candidates and each will require a different time commitment. During the bookend term (5 weeks in July/August at the beginning of the program and 3 weeks in May at the end of the program), Teacher Candidates will be in university course sessions Monday through Friday. During the two 13-week terms (mid-August to mid-November and January to March), Teacher Candidates will attend university courses three days per week and observe and participate in a school classroom one day per week (plus a four-day observation in September during the first week of school). And, when Teacher Candidates are involved in the five-week Practice Teaching and four-week Professional Interest placements (mid-November through December, April through early May, and June), they will be in their school placements from Monday through Friday.

Q. Can I choose the school in which I want to do my practicum placements?

Yes and no. You will have some say in the decision. However, Tyndale's partnering school boards (Durham District School Board, Peel District School Board, Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board, and several Catholic School Boards) will have the final say. All of these school boards coordinate the placement of Teacher Candidates in schools through their central offices. Tyndale's Coordinator of Teacher Candidate Placement will work closely with each of the school boards to match your location preference with the school boards' placement availability.

Q. What prerequisites do I need in order to be certified to teach French?

In order to teach French as a Second Language at the P/J level, a teacher requires an Additional Qualification in French. Successful completion of the P/J French as a Second Language elective course (EDPE 5053) meets this requirement.

At the J/I level, a teacher requires FSL to be listed as a subject specialty teachable. Tyndale offers a course entitled French as a Second Language (Intermediate Teachable), which will fulfill the criteria for J/I candidates.  It ought to be noted that this course is not a course on how to speak French. It is a course on how to teach French as a Second Language. Therefore, to be eligible to take the course, Teacher Candidates must write a French Language competency test after the program begins in July (see next FAQ for details), and, if registered in the J/I track, have successfully completed at least two full French courses (12 credit hours) at the post-secondary level.
