Our last days in Kolkata (India)

Posted by: Team India on Thursday, June 9, 2011 - 17:55

Monday, we were with the Jewelry Business ladies again. Victoria shared a devotion, and Hilary shared her testimony. Then Victoria taught English, as Adrianna and Melody helped sort and organize new stones that Monique had recently bought. In the afternoon we went to Mother Theresa House. We saw a bunch of nuns kneeling around her tomb praying. There were posters and memorabilia that explained her life and ministry. Later that day, Victoria fell and scraped her knee getting into a taxi, ruining 1 of 4 pairs of pants that were damaged during the trip.

Kenya 2011: Young Ravens (Kenya)

"O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." Psalm 63:1 (NIV)

VBS - our second week (India)

Posted by: Team India on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 - 13:51

We helped out at a VBS at the Assembly of God Church here in Kolkata. Overall, the experience was very Western - the kids all speak English, and it was very much how you might experience a VBS back home. The theme was 'Panda-Mania: Where God is wild about you!' So everything we did was Panda-themed.

Kenya 2011: More than Football... or Hockey (Kenya)

Posted by: Team Kenya on Friday, May 27, 2011 - 11:38
Canucks move on to the Stanley Cup Final!

I was so excited when I heard the news on a phone call to my Aunt in Toronto. I've been cheering for the Canucks for years, so even in Kenya that news was exciting... and foreign. Ice hockey is a world away here and football (that's soccer to all you North Americans) is the sport of choice. Many children have their favourite team's jersey; Chelsea is popular, there are quite a few Arsenals, a few Liverpools, A.C. Milans, Barcelonas and of course, a sea of Manchester Uniteds.

Kenya 2011: Orphans and Refugees (Kenya)

Posted by: Team Kenya on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 - 08:02

This post is difficult to write. Currently, I am sitting on our porch under the equatorial skies. If I look north I can see the big dipper (upside down) and if I look south I can see the southern cross. The air is cool and breezy at night, a stark contrast from the blaze of heat during the day, and I can hear crickets and the squeaks of bats. Those are the only easy descriptions I can give you. Everything else is difficult.

Kenya 2011: Three Men in a Gazebo (Kenya)

Posted by: Team Kenya on Sunday, May 22, 2011 - 12:14
Living in Northeastern Kenya has been the most eye opening experience for the three of us.

As I write this I am sitting on a makeshift bench in a corrugated tin 'internet cafe'. The 'internet cafe' is about 10 feet by 10 feet with a single old laptop and a sand floor. This place is so far from Toronto, physically, economically and culturally. To be here on our own, with no one more experienced, adds to the sense of isolation, but the three of us would not have it any other way. We have gone through our ups and downs but God has been teaching us much through this.

So far ... (India)

Posted by: Team India on Monday, May 16, 2011 - 07:18

We've had an interesting journey so far. Our flight out of Pearson was delayed about 4 hours, which meant that we missed our connecting flight, and had to take 2 other flights, to get here (so 3 planes in total). We went about 8 hours from Toronto to Frankfurt, then about 5.5 from Frankfurt to Dubai, then another 6 hours from Dubai to Kolkata ... I think ... It was all very confusing. In total it was probably about a day and a half of travel. Driving to the Shaws place, Hilary threw up in the car. Victoria cried in a restaurant during lunch ...

Kenya 2011: Birds, Zebras and a Volcano (Kenya)

Posted by: Team Kenya on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 - 14:48

We have been in Kenya for just over 24 hours now and all three of us love it already. It's beautiful, we've met great people, we've seen so much and there is still so much to see and learn about. Last night we got in around 8:30 and missionary hosts was there waiting for us at the airport. He took us in his rugged landrover to his welcoming home. The family has been great to us. They are such a friendly, easy-going, joyful people.

Kenya 2011: What Brings Me to Kenya? (Kenya)

Posted by: Team Kenya on Friday, May 6, 2011 - 01:16

After months of preparation, thousands of dollars raised, a couple days of training, much prayer and many meetings we are finally about to leave for Kenya. I find myself thinking of what brought me to this point.
